A better profile should also address the low self-esteem that can seem prevalent in the function. Not only should employers recognise their Payroll managers as professionals, but payroll managers should feel better about themselves too. Their work needs to be valued more and their contribution to the organisation given greater attention.

There is no doubt that the IPP is chomping at the bit to get the structure and profile of the organisation ready for chartered status, but are payroll professionals ready to go that extra mile themselves? Indeed, would such a move make that much difference to the job?

‘It’s a fantastic move for the payroll profession’, says Kerry Jones, payroll manager for Snowdrop Systems. ‘We’ve been waiting a long time to get some recognition alongside areas such as accountancy and this will raise the profile of profession in the right way.’…
